Blob Hates Needles! by Ruby S. G. is a picture book that tells the story of a kid named Blob, who, as the title suggests, does not like needles at all. Although Mom says that needles help to maintain sound health, it does not sound convincing enough to Blob. Mom takes Blob to the clinic, promising a special treat when it is all over. When Blob’s turn comes, Blob starts to feel anxious once again and refuses to cooperate with the nurse. Through love, patience, and the use of some special techniques, Mom and the nurse help Blob go through the process smoothly. By the end, Blob manages to overcome the fear of needles and celebrates a new achievement.
Ruby S. G.’s Blob Hates Needles! is a quick and enjoyable read. I like how Ruby focuses on a common fear and avoids specifying Blob’s gender, making the character relatable to most children. The story flows smoothly, and the rhyming verses and the repetition of “Blob” make it sound fun and pleasant. The simple and colorful illustrations and the use of humor add to the overall charm of the book. Ruby beautifully shows how the adults around a child can help them deal with anxiety and face their fears by showing patience and providing support. I also loved the ending, where the author lets readers know that all the achievements in life, no matter how small, are worth celebrating. I would recommend this book to children aged two to six."
